The art of the corset

Melanie Talkington, founder of and designer for the Canadian label Lace Embrace, is fully devoted to corset making.

If there is someone to blame, it would have to be Dolly Parton—Melanie Talkington saw her on television as a child and was enthralled by her curves. From that moment on it was clear to her that she wanted to make the kind of clothing that transforms any woman into a curvy femme fatale
in minutes.
Today, insiders consider Melanie Talkington one of the best designers for Victorian, Edwardian and 18th century style corsets. Pieces from her own antique collection— with 108 examples one of Canada's largest—serve as models. "One day I'd like to make my collection accessible to the public in the form of a museum," the selftaught designer proclaims.
In her Vancouver atelier, founded in 1997, Melanie often greets notables such as Dita Von Teese or Cathy Jung – according to the "Guinness Book of Records" the woman with the smallest waist in the world (39 cm). But also average women with a foible for the pinup look come to the designer who began her career creating wedding gowns. "My corsets are reproductions of antique models that are characterised by their wearability. They allow their wearer to have fun and feel pretty," explains Talkington.
A dyed-in-the-wool corset wearer herself, Melanie Talkington uses the finest materials like silk, cottons and leather, which are decorated with lace, embroidery and ribbons. The extravagant Lace Embrace creations can be seen at BODY LOOK from 4 to 6 February in hall 15 at the Düsseldorf fairgrounds.
