Industrial waste management companies will present a turnover of 895 million euros in 2006
The sector will be brought together at the trade event, TEM TECMA 2006, between 13th and 16th June Around 250 companies provide employment for some 3,000 workers. The dangerous waste management market presents some favourable results, featuring average annual growth of around 8%.
The industrial waste management sector is highly fragmented, although it is dominated by a small number of large groups. The considerable range of waste that is generated and the variety of treatments favour the existence of different companies specializing in these areas. Companies from this segment will be presented at TEM TECMA 2006, the International Town-Planning and Environment Fair, which is organised by IFEMA and will stage its thirteenth edition between 13th and 16th June next at Feria de Madrid. This fair is the leading event of its kind in Spain and will feature the participation of more than five hundred exhibitors. Turnover increased in the year 2005 by 7.8% compared to 2004, coming to 830 million euros compared to 770 million euros two years previously. Forecasts indicate that 2006 will witness a turnover of 895 million euros, a figure that will increase to 960 million in the year 2007, representing growth of 7.8% and 7.3%, respectively, according to a report published by the consulting company, DBK. The number of management companies (excluding authorised out-of-use vehicle processing centres, as well as companies that only transport and/or store dangerous waste) comes to around 250, providing jobs to some 3,000 employees. Management of Dangerous Waste The dangerous waste management market has developed favourably since the late 1990's, presenting average annual growth between 1998-2005 of around 8%. With regard to the destination of dangerous waste, 29% is recycled and the remaining 71% is destroyed. Under the heading of elimination, 41% is kept in safe deposits, 26% is subject to physical-chemical treatment and the remaining 4% undergoes biological treatment. Profits within the sector rose slightly in the year 2005, coming to around 8-10% of total revenue. The favourable market development prospects for this industry, based on the official recognition of new dangerous waste and special waste products, will lead to an influx of new companies over the next few years. This growth will also be based on the application of processing and treatment measures to dangerous materials on the part of the Spanish authorities, placing the emphasis on reuse and recycling of components, as opposed to elimination. However, the concentration of waste management activities in the hands of a few large groups will continue. These groups will set up subsidiaries or take over other companies in order to extend their geographical coverage and extend their areas of activity, thus providing a global service to clients, according to DBK. Among the new dangerous waste markets, we might highlight that of electrical and electronic products. Regulation of these products was introduced in 2005, following the adoption of Royal Decree 208/2005, of 25th February, regarding electrical and electronic devices and their waste management. Catalonia is the region that has the largest capacity for dangerous waste management, accounting for 19% of the market. Andalusia, the Basque Country and Asturias follow behind. These four Spanish regions account for 67% of Spain's entire capacity.
