The Barcelona Boat Show closed its best and most international edition to date
40 countries represented between direct and indirect exhibitors
The International Boat Show of Barcelona closed its 45th edition, considered to be the best it has ever staged. With 624 exhibitors from all segments of sports and recreational boating, more than 2,000 boats and a 10% growth, resulting in 112,000 m2 of net exhibition space, the 2006 Boat Show closed its doors with a positive balance. The total booked space required the use of all 5 pavilions in Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Vía exhibition centre and, simultaneously, the 2 Port Vell docks with the boats in the On-Water Show. The Barcelona Show is a leading boating event which is ranked one of the top three in Europe together with the ones in Düsseldorf (Germany) and Genoa (Italy). Furthermore, this year’s show achieved an important international dimension, with representation from 40 countries between direct and indirect exhibitors. This figure is 25% higher than in 2005. After Spain, the biggest percentage of participants came from Italy, the U.S., France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. The organisers estimate that the show was attended by 178,000 people (175,000 in 2005) and underline an important factor: many of them were interested in purchasing different types of boats. Exhibitors in general highlighted the quality of contacts and operations, which points to a potential growth in sales for next season. In this sense, it can be said that 70% of sales in the Spanish sector are initiated at the International Boat Show of Barcelona. For the first time, the show had 6 theme areas which featured exhibitors and activities related to each sector: Sea, Fun Beach, Fishing, Traditional Marina, Innovation and BCN Dive. The latter housed around fifty exhibitors of underwater products and one of its major attractions was the presence of the prestigious photographer David Doubilet, contributor to the National Geographic Magazine, and an exhibition of his work. The show also set the scene for more activities than ever with 182 side events taking place over the 9 days. This fact makes the Barcelona Show not only a commercial event but also a meeting point for professionals and fans of sports and recreational boating. The events programme included the presence of sailors and Olympic racers, the yacht design awards ceremony, the announcement and staging of races, conferences on all types of boating-related topics and presentations of products by exhibitors.
