The museum is the result of the collector's spirit and philanthropic mentality of Franz Mayer, a German who adopted the Mexican nationality. It also contains a libray , open to the public, with a wide selection of antique and rare books, as well as eight hundred different editions of Don Quijote de la Mancha.
Located in a eighteenth-century building facing onto the Plaza de la Santa Veracruz, the Franz Mayer Museum houses the finest collection of decorative arts in Mexico and presents temporary shows of design and photography.
The permanent collection allows visitors to gain an appreciation of decorative arts from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries, with a variety of places of origin, materials and styles. Besides its temporary exhibits, the Franz Mayer Museum also offers guided tours, courses, lectures, concerts, performances, children's workshops and special activities for members. There is a bookstore and gift shop, and a pleasant café in the area of the cloister of the museum's key point of attraction because of its beauty.
